Growing up in Chicago David Murphy
aka “Longhair” never dreamed that his life would have evolved into
this. Raised as a hardworking,
respectful young man, always putting others first. When his father left to fight for the
North in the Civil War, he worked after school in construction helping to build
the stock yards of Chicago. His mother worked hard at and loved the
popularity of booksellers’ row on State Street. Regularly receiving letters from
the front, David and his Mother could feel as if his dad was still at
home. In 1871 David witnessed the
obliteration of the Great Chicago Fire.
A series of events would assist in David deciding he no longer wants to
live the city life. “Go -
West or Bust” was growing in popularity; it was the calling that would
shape the second part of his life.
In 1884, thirteen years after leaving Chicago, a writer propositions David to tell
his story. Agreeing to do so, the
walk down memory lane has brought forth a vast collection of tales. This is an adventure interwoven and
infused with Love, Heartbreak, Laughter, Anger, Death and Life. Survival techniques came with a
punishing fist, the bone crushing impact of the tomahawk, a well placed stick
of dynamite, gunshots delivered in total accuracy via a Henry Rifle, or a couple blazing revolvers.
No adversary is safe when
confronting the drifter known as “Longhair”.
The life of the western frontier is
not exclusive to the physical realm nor is his story. Confronted by internal uncertainty
– How far can the human spirit be pushed? When does the testing of faith cross
over to a forsaken soul? He presses
on, what is fate? Can there be such
a thing? He takes it day by day.
A strong drink of gun fights,
women, lust and adventure - with a chaser saturated by the demands of the
heart, soul and mind.
In his own words, this is the life
of the drifter known as Longhair.
